Image Magazine: Interview with Karon Jacobson December 06 2014

Here is the interview and some of the photos in the feature article I did recently with Irish fashion magazine - Image. It was a pleasure to do the interview, and I enjoyed the opportunity to talk about my design process, from travelling to choosing the right gem stones, that inspire my work.
What are your favourite stones and techniques?
I use diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires and tourmalines. I use sliced diamonds and tourmalines for their size, but the weight is reduced. It means earrings get the wow-factor, but aren’t too heavy on the ear.

You’re all about mixing textures …
That’s a big part of my signature style; I often use leather and cord instead of gold or silver chains for necklaces or bracelets. It gives the stones and pendants an earthy, casual vibe whilst complementing the stones.

What’s new for autumn/winter?
My diamond and precious stone ring charm and earring charm collection. The idea of taking a beautiful sparkling stone out of a static setting, such as a claw or bezel set, appealed to me to show the stone.

You travel a lot to source your stones – tell us about a special piece
I discovered the cabochon emerald several years ago on a trip to Rajasthan. The dealer explained it was originally the centre stone of a magnificent emerald necklace previously owned and worn by the Maharaja of Jaipur. After some serious haggling, the stone was mine. I set it in a very simple yellow gold bezel setting, and today it is worn as a ring. It’s one of my favourite pieces.

Trends to love this season?
It’s all about big, bold colours. Large hoop earrings worn as a pair or singular, large hand and arm cuffs and chokers, single cabochon cut rings set in a simple bezel setting; yellow gold will be a strong trend too.

Beautiful Jewels: Designing New Pieces in Studio April 10 2014

This is one way the design process evolves for me. I sift through a parcel of gleaming gem stones identifying the best quality, colour, uniformity and scale and hand pick the most beautiful gems. I usually have a vision of the design I want to achieve, but often the beauty of the stones determine the finished piece. These photos show some stages of my design process when I am producing a piece - sketches and early designs to finished jewellery. Here, you can see a beautiful selection of multi colours tourmalines, some selected stones and the final finished pair of earrings. Of course the process actually takes several weeks for every piece, before it has my final approval.

Pictured here are pieces inspired by the Lotus Flower from my signature collection which symbolises Beauty and Eternity. They look so pretty by day with casual wear and yet so elegant taking you into evening.

The Pink Lotus Collection Earrings are made from a selection of beautiful faceted dark and light pink brilliant cut tourmalines. These stones are bezel set on 18kt yellow gold shepherd hooks.

The second earrings pictures are Sapphire Lotus Earrings. These are exquisite pastel coloured faceted Sapphires, bezel set on 18kt Yellow Gold Shepherd Hooks.

Then we have the Diamond Open Lotus Earring Charms design which is a Diamond Lotus Flower set in Sterling SIlver Earring Charms. These are very versatile and can be worn on Sterling Silver Hoops or Sterling Silver Shepherd Hooks.

Designing the Mala Necklace Collection in Studio March 04 2014

This is an inside the studio preview of the Mala Necklace Collection, here in India. I handpick the stones for my jewellery designs and am very excited about this new piece. The tassels are made of silk and come in a range of colours. The beads are mat onyx and sterling silver balls threaded with delicate fine silver thread. Pictured here is this fabulous raspberry silk tassel necklace. The collection is inspired from Buddhist Mala prayer beads.

Travels in India: Beautiful Indian Wedding February 27 2014

Wedding in Rajasthan • February 2014

On my recent work trip to India I had the pleasure to be invited to a friend's wedding. I had heard Indian weddings were typically large events and this party did not disappoint! Our wonderful hosts told us that the wedding was a "modest" affair in size even though there was more than 2,500 people in attendance! The scale of everything was epic... magnificent saris and shimmering jewels adorned the wedding party, the food and decorations creating a luxury carnival atmosphere.

This was a truly magical experience and I felt so inspired by the beauty of this very special event.

Notes from my trip to wondrous Jaipur in India - Day 3 November 18 2013

Karon Jacobson Jewellery new collection pieces from the workshop

I am on my third day into my work trip to Jaipur and I'm making great progress with the new Bracelet Collection.

My focus was to design a bracelet that is both uber cool and stylish, wearable everyday and also appropriate for the gym in both aesthetic and durability. I personally start my day, after a super nutritious breakfast, with minimum 1-2 hrs of physical activity 5-6 days a week. I'm either on my Yoga mat, Pilates Reformer or trekking up a hill! So my jewellery has to compliment my activities and of course, I don't want to take my jewellery off every time I exercise. I sometimes jump in the shower with them on but honestly I wouldn't recommend that all the time.

The new bracelet collection is made with lovely Diamond Charms on either a simple cord in Black or Mink or smooth Onyx Beads with a Silver Clasp. Most importantly, the bracelets look great on their own or stacked with incorporating some of your traditional jewellery like a Diamond Tennis Bracelet.

Notes from my trip to wondrous Jaipur in India November 15 2013

I arrived in Jaipur armed with my sketch book full of new designs and concepts.

What started out as a refined version of my Mala Prayer Bead collection took a sharp turn right when I found these amazing hand carved Onyx Skull Heads. My imagination went into overdrive and the challenge was now technical not just creative. The design came to me immediately but the skulls needed to be drilled in order to hang from the Onyx Beads and have the Silk Tassel flowing out from the jaw of the Skull.

After a few days of talking through the design concept I managed to show the workshop how to make minimal drills into the top and bottom of the skull to maintain the integrity of the pendant. Unfortunately, there are only three skulls so these pieces will be each designed as "one of a kinds". I'm incorporating Silver/Gold/Diamonds to these three limited edition necklaces. The Skull Tassels will be Collectors pieces.

In addition, I have the original design in production using Onyx Beads and magnificent luxurious Silk Tassels in Hot Pink, Dark Purple, Fire Orange, Silky Black. Hope to have ready in the next few weeks....ill post as soon as the are ready!
